SUMMARY:WBA Training | Managing Summer Temperatures and Biological Health
DESCRIPTION:Overview\nTuesday 19th December\, 12:30-17:00 GMT timezone \nThe training is delivered by Angela Cronjé\, a chemical engineer with 20 years experience in organic waste processing on operational plants.  \nThis training is about the effect of temperature variation on biological health and gas production for AD. AD plants are typically built with lots of insulation to keep substrate warm even in cold winter temperatures\, but this can contribute to increasing tank temperatures and biological risks in the hotter summer months. Gas production can also suffer when process temperatures drop due to low ambient temperatures or failures in heating systems. Operators will gain a better understanding of how process temperatures vary\, what this means for biological health and gas production and what control measures should be considered to mitigate the risk of serious biological failures.   \n  \n\n\n \n  \nAgenda \n\nWelcome and introductions\nHeatwaves and AD\n\nHow does a digester over-heat?\nCase studies\nImportance of data collection and interpretation\n\n\nRising temperatures and biology\n\nWhat are the ‘normal’ operating temps and why?\nThe effect of increasing temperatures on digester biology\nThe effect on gas production and composition\nCase studies\n\n\n\n\nDigester temperature and ammonia\n\nThe risks of a high ammonia diet\nAmmonia chemistry and inhibition\nThe effect of increased temperature on digester ammonia\nCase Studies\n\n\n\n\nControl measures\n\nPlant design\nTank cooling circuits and external chilling options\nDiet planning\nFailed biology recovery\n\n\nQ+A/ open discussion\n\n\n  \n  \nThe World Biogas Association is the global trade association for the biogas\, landfill gas and anaerobic digestion (AD) sectors\, dedicated to facilitating the adoption of biogas globally. We believe that the global adoption of biogas technologies is a multi-faceted opportunity to produce clean\, renewable energy while resolving global issues related to development\, public health and economic growth. We seek to represent all organisations working in the biogas industry at the international level across the world\, including; national associations\, biogas operators and developers\, equipment providers\, water companies\, the agricultural sector\, waste companies\, and academic & research institutions. \n  \n  \nDiscounts available for group bookings and non-OECD countries. \n  \nFor questions and to pay by bank transfer\, contact rzlokower@worldbiogasassociation.org \nTo pay by credit card\, select your tickets below…

SUMMARY:Webinar | World Biogas Association: Outlook for Biogas and Biomethane
DESCRIPTION:How quickly can biogas grow? \nOur house is on fire. We have between now and 2030 to put it out. But time – and carbon budgets – are running out. \nOne industry that can make a big difference fast -and is therefore predicted to experience steep growth by all reputable forecasters – is that of biogas/biomethane. Everyone agrees there will be growth\, but there are differences on how much. \nIn its latest annual energy report\, the International Energy Agency (IEA) predicts the bioenergy sector will be the second-fastest growing source of energy between now and 2050 after hydrogen. The EU projects big increases\, making biogas one of the three key pillars replacing Russian gas in Europe. BP\, having purchased the world’s largest RGN provider in December 2022\, has forecast a 25-fold increase in biogas. \nBut will these predictions be met? What are the assumptions behind them? The industry could deliver an 11% reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions by 2030 and deliver half of the Global Methane Pledge\, signed at COP26 in Glasgow – yet we are currently tapping into just 2% of the global capacity of anaerobic digestion (AD). The potential for growth is enormous. Fully deployed\, AD could deliver 6-9% of the world’s current energy consumption\, 16-22% of its electricity consumption if used for power generation or replace 26-37% of its natural gas consumption should the resulting gas from the process be upgraded to biomethane. \nJoin the WBA alongside the IEA\, BP and the EU Commission as we discuss forecasts for the outlook of biogas and biomethane\, the challenges and uncertainties around these forecasts and what policy and regulatory mechanisms we need to fulfil the sectoral growth that is required to keep 1.5 C alive. \nThis is a must-attend webinar for policymakers\, developers\, and investors in one of the world’s most exciting renewable sectors.

SUMMARY:WBA Training | Technical Aspects for Implementing A Successful Biogas Project | 14 Sep 2023
DESCRIPTION:There are five different families of digesters\, but over 90% of biogas plants in Europe belong to just one of them. In most cases\, plants are engineered and optimised according to the constructor’s criteria\, or its proprietary technology or patents\, or the agreement it has with the suppliers of components. Such a definition of “optimum” does not mean that the final outcome is optimum for the specific context of the customer. Solutions that are “the market standard” in one country are not necessarily suitable elsewhere. Knowing to evaluate how to choose the most suitable solution for a given context is then crucial to get the highest return from the investment. \nLearn about the basics of anaerobic digestion technology and how to manage the digestion process and biogas purification in this training course. \n\n\n  \n  \n\n\n\n\n\nAgenda \nPart 1: Basics of Anaerobic Digestion Biology \n1.1 Understanding AD and its technical jargon: HRT\, CRT\, COD\, TS\, VS\, TOL\, OLR\, etc. \n1.2 Types of digesters\, advantages and disadvantages of each one\, depending on the substrate \n1.3 The optimum diet for the digester: measurement of the BMP (biochemical methane potential) of the feedstock BEFORE the construction \n1.4 Common mistakes in biogas plant design \nPart 2: Managing the Digestion Process and Biogas Purification \n2.1 The biological stability of the digester \n2.2 Frequent problems of the biologic process and how to prevent them \n2.3 Desulfurisation technologies: a short review of the pros and cons of each solution \n2.4 Upgrading technologies : a short review \n

SUMMARY:ADBA Northern Ireland Conference
DESCRIPTION:ADBA Northern Ireland Conference  \nBiomethane: accelerating the energy transition.  \nDates: September 7th  \nTime: 09:00-18:30\, including lunch and followed by drinks and networking.  \nVenue: ICC Belfast\, 2 Lanyon Place\, Belfast BT1 3WH  \nBiomethane is on target to be flowing into the Northern Ireland gas grid from this September. It is the first small step on an ambitious journey to make the province a biomethane powerhouse and net exporter.  \nThe target of the gas transmission and distribution companies is to have a net zero gas grid in Northern Ireland by 2050. To achieve this will require the development of ~150 biomethane production plants.  \nThe transition is seen as a key driver of economic growth and job creation across the region.  \nA collaborative research project supported by the Centre for Advanced Sustainable Energy (CASE) and Invest NI has found that Northern Ireland has the resources to produce more biomethane from agricultural waste and underutilised grassland than previously thought possible – over 6.12 TWh per annum.   \nThis equates to 82% of regional distribution network demand in 2021. The gas networks say this estimation is conservative as it does not include potential feedstock from dedicated energy crops or domestic and non-domestic waste.  \nADBA’s Northern Ireland Conference will consider the technical\, policy\, legislative and regulatory preparation being pursued to facilitate the decarbonisation of the energy system and the scale up of renewables gases in NI; plans to establish Bio-CNG infrastructure to support transport sector’s transition to renewable gas-powered vehicles; and inward investment opportunities.  \nThe full day Northern Ireland Conference will also consider the revenue potential of CO2 and optimisation of digestate as part of a nutrient management system and gateway to further bio-refining and revenue streams.

SUMMARY:WBA Training | Biogas from Wastewater
DESCRIPTION:Biogas from wastewater sludges \nWastewater treatment generates organic sludges that pose a great opportunity for biogas generation if treated by anaerobic digestion (AD). This course will explore the nature of those sludges and the biogas yields attainable with different AD flowsheets. We will also investigate opportunities to boost biogas generation by implementing thermal or biological pre-treatments and how these can impact digestate quality and its uses. The ultimate goal of this training is to provide insights on biogas generation from wastewater sludges\, focussing on understanding full-treatment flowsheets.  We will be covering: \n\nWastewater sludge properties\nThe need of thickening wastewater sludges to enable treatment in AD\nConventional AD designs and the role of pre-treatments in increasing biogas generation\nInsights into digestate uses and challenges\n\nThe session will finish with an interactive flowsheet exercise\, providing attendants with an opportunity to apply their learning to deliver a full treatment solution for wastewater sludges. \nYadira Bajon Fernandez \nYadira is a Senior Lecturer at Cranfield University\, where she leads the bioresources treatment research within the Water Science Institute. She has developed expertise and a growing international profile in applied and fundamental research on sludge and waste treatment\, with particular emphasis on increasing asset resilience and value recovery through implementation of biorefinery concepts; which directly contributes to the UK’s Carbon and Circular Economy targets. Yadira is recognised for her bioresources strategy-setting work\, supporting the UK water sector delivering their NetZero targets and keeping resilience over uncertainties on the future of sludge to land recycling. She is a council member of the world biogas association (WBA)\, serves as bioresources expert for one of the UK’s water utilities H&S Advisory Board and acts as the Awards and Bursaries Coordinator for IChemE’s Water Special Interest Group.
